Miami Men In First, Women Third At -A- Invitational

Coral Gables, Fla. (www.hurricanesports.com) – Wesley Stoddard (Huntsville, AL) finished third in the 200-yard individual medley (2:00.80) and seventh in both the 100-yard butterfly (55.57) and the 100-yard freestyle (50.01) to highlight the second day of competition at the “A” Invitational in Coral Gables, FL.
Stoddard has accounted for 26 points in helping the Miami men’s team to a 166-164 lead over the Miami Metro Aquatic Swimming Club. His 26 points lead all individual performers
Sophomore Javier Wagner (Mexico), in second place with 23 points, finished second in the 100-yard freestyle (48.31) and the 100-yard butterfly (54.05) as well as seventh in the 200-yard individual medley (2:03.10). Senior Scott Gentles (Atlanta, GA), 22 points, took second in the 200-yard individual medley (1:58.15) and fifth in the 100-yard butterfly (55.10). Sophomore John Stevens (Portland, ME), 20 points, finished third in the 200-yard backstroke (2:00.10) and fourth in the 200-yard individual medley (2:01.30).
The Miami women’s team is in third-place with 125 points. Plantation Swim Team leads the women’s field with 171 points followed by Miami Metro Aquatic Club with 156.50 points.UM’s Elaine Schwartz (Mt. Laurel, NJ) leads the women’s field with 28 points and Jennifer Wier (Cooper City, FL) is in second with 27 points. Schwartz finished second in the 100-yard butterfly (59.26) and third in both the 200-yard individual medley (2:09.17) and the 100-yard breaststroke (1:10.29). Wier won the 100-yard breaststroke (1:07.78) and finished fourth in the 200-yard individual medley (2:09.25).
The Hurricanes combined total of 291 points trails only the Miami Metro Swim Team (320.50 points) after three sessions of the 28 team meet. Competition concludes Sunday at 12:00 p.m. at the Norman Whitten Student Union Pool.
