UM Swimmers Dominate First Day Of Competition At The -A-Invitational

Coral Gables, Fla – Junior Wesley Stoddard (Huntsville, AL) took first in the 500-yard freestyle (4:42.37) and second in the 400-yard individual medley (4:12.24) to help the Hurricanes to a commanding lead after the first day of competition at the “A” Invitational in Coral Gables, FL.
Miami (94 points) leads Miami Metro Aquatic Club (28 points) by 66 points heading into Saturday’s competition. Aqua Crest Swim Club is in third with nine points while Cane Aquatics is in fourth with five points.
Stoddard, who has won the 500-yard freestyle in two of three meets this season, accounted for 16 points. Scott Gentles contributed 11 points with a third-place finish in the 500-yard freestyle (4:46.77) and a fourth place finish in the 400-yard individual medley (4:22.01).
On the women’s side sophomore Elaine Schwartz (Mt. Laurel, NJ) recorded nine points with a first place finish in the 400-yard individual medley (4:27.22). Freshman Gema Crespo (Miami, FL) and junior Brittany White (Cockeysville, MD) both registered six points. Crespo finished third in the 500-yard freestyle (5:08.59) and White finished third in the 400-yard individual medley (4:31.87).
With their times in the 400-yard individual medley, Schwartz and White both qualified for the 2000 U.S. Short Course Meters Nationals, which will be held in Auburn, AL on November 30, 2000.
The second day of the Invitational will pick up tomorrow at 1:00 p.m at the Norman Whitten Student Union Pool. Admission is free.
