Leier Bows Out In Olympic Semifinals

Sydney, Australia – Former University of Miami swimmer Rhiannon Leier (Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada) finished sixth in her semifinal heat and barely missed qualifying for the finals of the 100-meter breaststroke at the Summer Olympic Games being held in Sydney, Australia.
Leier, competing in her first Olympic Games as a member of the Canadian Olympic Team, finished in a time of 1:09.63 to miss qualifying for the final by three tenths of a second.
Leier, 23, reached the semifinal by taking third in her preliminary heat (1:09.68) earlier in the day. Her time was the 12th fastest of the preliminary round.
Leier is a 1999 graduate of the University of Miami where she was a three-time BIG EAST Champion in the 100-yard breaststroke (1996, 1997, 1999). She qualified for the Olympics with a first-place finish in the 100-meter breaststroke at the Canadian Olympic Trials.
