Melanie Borger Named Assistant Crew Coach

Coral Gables, Fla. (www.hurricanesports.com) – University of Miami Athletic Director Paul Dee and Head Crew Coach Joe O’Connor announce the hiring of Melanie Borger as Assistant Varsity Women’s Coach/Recruiting Coordinator for the upcoming 2000 season.
“Melanie brings a lot of enthusiasm to University of Miami Crew,” said O’Connor. “She has a tremendous amount of experience with high school rowers. We are excited to be adding her to our staff.”
Borger comes to Miami after serving as assistant varsity women’s coach at Robinson High School in Fairfax, VA. Borger also ran the masters novice program at the Prince William Rowing Association in Woodbridge, VA as well as the sculling coach at Occuquan Boat Club in northern Virginia.
As a rower, Borger was a four-year member of the Rutgers University varsity women’s crew. With the Scarlet Knights, Borger won the Silver medal at the I.R.A. championships in 1998, as well as qualifying for the inaugural NCAA Women’s Rowing Championship in 1997. Additionally, Borger was co-captain for the 1997-98 seasons and was recognized, as the team’s Most Improved Rower in 1996.
Borger earned her Bachelor of Arts degree with honors in Anthropology at Rutgers in 1998. She also completed minors in Japanese, French and Economics.
The Hurricanes begin the 2000 season with its own Head of the Creek Regatta on Indian Creek in Miami Beach.
