Moser Stands Fifth In Decathlon After First Day

DURHAM, N.C. – University of Miami junior Aaron Moser (Bonne Terre, MO)recorded a UM opening day record of 3,892 points and is in fifth-place afterthe first day of decathlon competition at the NCAA Outdoor Track andField Championships in Durham, NC.
Moser, the three-time BIG EAST Champion and 11th ranked decathlete in thenation, opened the day with second-place finishes in the 100-meters and longjump. His time of 10.89 in the 100-meters was the second fastest of thecompetition while his leap of 7.03 meters (23-00.75) in the long jump set apersonal record.
“I felt very comfortable heading into today’s competition,” said Moser,the first UM decathlete to ever qualify for the NCAA Championships. “I triednot to put a lot of pressure on myself. I just wanted to come out and havefun.”
As the 94-degree heat and high humidity took its toll on a number of thecompetitors, Moser continued to perform well. The Miami and BIG EAST recordholder posted his second-best throw of the season in the shot put (41-07.00)as well as a person best 1.93 meters (6-04.00) in the high jump and a personbest 50.34 in the 400 meters.
“This is the type of weather we practice in everyday,” commented Moser onthe high temperatures “But I think it was still a factor due to the fact thatyou usually don’t do as many events during an average practice session.”
The decathlon competition will conclude on Saturday with the 110-meterhurdles, discus, pole vault, javelin and 1,500-meters.
“Entering the competition I was hoping to be somewhere in the top-10after the first day,” said Moser. “I am usually stronger on the second day soto be in fifth at this point gives me a lot of confidence heading intotomorrow.”
