Jones, Moss Win at Big East Track And Field Championships

PISCATAWAY, N.J. – Miami junior Daryl Jones won the 100-meters for thesecond consecutive season and junior Santana Moss captured the triple jumpchampionship at the BIG EAST Outdoor Track and Field Championships inPiscataway, NJ.

Jones, who won with a time of 10.48, got off to a slow start but caught thefield by the 50-meter mark and pulled away at the end for the title.

“I didn’t get off to a great start but I got stronger as the race went on,”said Jones. “If I’m in the race at the 50-meter mark I usually have a goodchance. Today at the 60-meter mark I really felt the adrenalin start to flow.”

Moss, who won the BIG EAST long jump title on Saturday, pulled of the rare double taking the triple jump with a leap of 15.46 meters (50-08.75). Moss,who recorded the winning jump on his final attempt, is only the third athleteto win both the BIG EAST long jump and triple jump in the same season and thefirst since Ray Humphrey (Georgetown) in 1984.

Following the meet Moss was honored as the BIG EAST Most Outstanding Field Performer.

“I hadn’t competed in the triple jump in two years so this was a little bitof a surprise,” said Moss. “I didn’t have a lot of time to prepare but Iguess it is kind of like riding a bike. It’s something you never forget.”

In the 110-meter hurdles the Hurricanes recorded second and fourth-placefinishes. All-America Caldrequis Lesley (Anderson, SC) took second with anNCAA provisional qualifying time of 13.87 while sophomore Gus Martin (MiamiNorthwestern) finished fourth with a time of 13.88. Martin’s time was also aNCAA provisional qualifier.
