Moser, Moss Win BIG EAST Track Titles

PISCATAWAY, N.J. – Miami junior Aaron Moser (Bonne Terre, MO) won the BIGEAST decathlon championship for the third consecutive season and juniorSantana Moss (Carol City) took home the long jump title at the BIG EASTOutdoor Track and Field Championships in Piscataway, NJ.
Moser won three of the final five events, including the 110-hurdles(14.62), discus (135-04.00) and pole vault (16-06.75), in setting a new UMand BIG EAST meet record with 7,358 points. Moser’s point total places him10th in the nation and provisionally qualifies him for the NCAA Outdoor Trackand Field Championships, May 31-June 3, in Durham, NC.
“I’ve only been able to prepare for about three weeks so I’m very happy Iwas able to pull this out,” said Moser. “I also wanted to give my self achance at qualifying for the NCAA Championships and I think was able to thattoday.”
Moss won the long jump title in dramatic fashion. Sitting in third-placewith one attempt left, the Miami native posted a leap of 7.98 meters(26-02.25) to move ahead of Georgetown’s France David (7.90 meters) and winthe title.
“To be honest I kind of shocked myself,” said Moss of his performance. “Ijust wanted to come out, do my best and try to make something happen. Ididn’t expect to come out and jump as far as I did.”The leap bettered the meet record of 7.87 meters (25-10.00) but will notstand due to a 2.2 meters per second wind reading. A 2.0 or lower windreading is required in order to set conference records.”We didn’t run him in the 100-meters in order to keep him fresh and itworked,” said head coach Mike Ward. “We think he has a chance to win thetriple jump tomorrow.”
In the 100-meters, junior Daryl Jones (Dallas, TX) qualified for the finalswith a time of 10.57. Jones, the defending champion, recorded the secondfastest qualifying time. Jones also qualified for the finals of the200-meters with a time of 21.49.
Miami also qualified two runners in the 110-meter hurdles. All-AmericaCaldrequis Lesley (Anderson, SC) won his heat with an NCAA provisionalqualifying time of 13.91 while Gus Martin (Miami Northwestern) moved ontotomorrow’s final with an NCAA provisional mark of 13.96.
Competition concludes on Sunday.
