Hurricanes Unveil New Look
April 8, 2000
The University of Miami unveiled a new look for its athletic teams during its annual spring football game today at the Orange Bowl. New uniform designs were unveiled for the football, basketball and baseball programs. The uniforms combine the traditional Miami elements of Orange and Green coloring with the use of the “U” mark as well as newer elements such as alternate colored striping down the sides.
“Our spring game is traditionally the first public appearance of any of our athletic teams for the upcoming year. We felt this would be a great opportunity to unveil our look of the future.
The designs go a long way in respecting our great traditions while adding some exciting elements to our identity.” Commented Miami Athletic Director Paul Dee.
“We are thrilled to have the opportunity to unveil the new look for the Miami Hurricanes.” added Head Football Coach Butch Davis. “Our players are excited to know that they have the very best when it comes to performance and style of the uniforms. They take great pride when they put on a University of Miami uniform, this project enhances that pride.”
Each of the uniforms have different qualities that the University hopes will assist their student-athletes’ performance. The football uniforms have been designed with a “batwing” jersey which provides a fit which should allow for a greater range of motion. The football pants are fitted with a Nike lycra pad pocket system has form fitting pads which reduces the bulk and weight of the equipment.
“One of the common attributes of our Championship Football teams has been speed. Our current team is also built around great speed. The new equipment pays special attention to this which obviously is important to our program.” added Davis
The new basketball uniforms also are designed to decrease the weight of the uniform and allow for greater movement. They are made of a Dri Fit fabrication which removes moisture allowing for a lighter fit and more comfort. The basketball shorts have also been adjusted for better fit and comfort.
“As our basketball program continues to grow it is important that we provide our students with the best we can offer. The best in uniform design and style is very important to us.” said Men’s Head Basketball Coach Leonard Hamilton
“We want our program to compete against the top teams in the Big East and in the country. We are always looking to put our team out in front in any way we can, the best uniforms and equipment assist us in making our program better.” added Women’s Head Basketball Coach Ferne Labati.
The Hurricane baseball uniform also have been designed with speed and comfort in mind. Using lightweight Dri Fit mesh fabrics the uniform is designed to allow more flexibility for the defending National Champions.
“The design and style are a great fit for our program. Our guys are looking forward to the arrival of the uniforms.” Said Head Baseball Coach Jim Morris.
The uniforms were designed by Nike, Inc. The University of Miami and Nike are in the third year of a ten-year agreement in which Nike provides the Hurricanes with equipment for all of their athletic teams.
“A year ago we approached Nike in regards to redesigning and upgrading our uniforms. We knew some newer concepts had been developed and we wanted to make sure that our students were receiving the best possible equipment. Nike agreed to take this project on and we are thankful to them for all their work.” Said Dee.
The teams will begin wearing the new uniforms in the Fall of 2000.
