Hurricane Swimming Dominates Winter Meet

CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The University of Miami women’s swimming team won both of their meets on Saturday, January 8, against the University of Massachusetts (135-127) and Georgetown University (171-81). The men’s swimming team defeated Georgetown University (174-86), but fell to the University of Massachusetts (179-81).

The Hurricane women (5-4) were led by junior Jen Weir (Cooper City, FL), who recorded three first-place finishes, and freshman Meghan Clabby (Coral Gables, FL), and freshman Elaine Schwartz (Mt. Laurel, NJ) who each scored two victories of their own. Weir won the 100-yard freestyle (:53.67), 200-yard freestyle (1:56.00), and the 100-yard butterfly (:59.25). Clabby scored her victories in the 100- and 200-yard breaststroke with times of 1:07.23 and 2:25.70, while Schwartz won the 200-yard butterfly (2:07.72) and the 200-yard individual medley (2:11.02).

The Hurricane men (2-7) were led by junior Scott Gentles (Atlanta, GA) and junior Dan Asencio (Newark, NJ), who combined for three first-place finishes. Gentles took both the 500- and 1000-yard freestyle events with times of 4:46.50 and 9:46.05, while Asencio won the 100-yard backstroke with a time of :53.07.

The University of Miami men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams return to action next Saturday on January, 15, at 1:00 p.m. against Rutgers University at Whitten Student Union Pool on the Coral Gables Campus.
