Hurricanes Fall To Gators

GAINESVILLE, Fla. – The University of Miami men’s and women’sswimming and diving teams both suffered losses to Florida on Friday. TheHurricane men (0-1) fell to UF (1-0) 130-91, while the UM women (0-1) weredefeated 127-92 by the Lady Gators (1-0).

Imre Lengyel(Budapest, Hungary ) and Tyce Routson, who finishedfirst and second in both the 1- and 3-meter diving events, led theHurricane men. Junior Scott Gentles had a second place finish in the1000-yard freestyle (9:49.40), while fellow junior Daniel Ascenio placedthird in the 50-yard freestyle (22.51).

On the women’s side, junior Jennifer Weir finished second in the200-yard IM and freshman Whitney Peach placed third in the 50-yardfreestyle (24.86). Miami split the diving events, with freshman KatieBeth Bryant finishing first in the 3-meter and third in the 1-meter andsophomore Emily Spychala finishing second in the 1-meter and third in the3-meter.

The Hurricanes were hurt by the absence of All-Americans JanelBenda, Jenny Keim, and Amy Lindblom for the women and Stefan Ahrens forthe men.

Miami will compete on Saturday against Florida State as a preludeto the Miami and Florida State football clash later that afternoon.
