UM Women Record Fastest Times at Year-End Regatta

CAMDEN, N.J. – University of Miami’s Varsity and Junior Varsity Eightseach recorded the fastest times of the day in their respective racesin qualifying for the Saturday’s Grand Final at the 1999 IntercollegiateRowing Association National Championship Regatta on Cooper’s River.
UM’s Varsity Eights jumped out early in the second heat and kept aboat-length’s lead on the rest of the field to finish first with atime of 6:41.20. The Hurricanes out-distanced George Washington (6:44.1),William & Mary, Purdue and George Mason for the automatic entry into Saturday’sfinal.
Kansas grabbed the other spot in Saturday’s final, as the Jayhawkswon first heat with a time of 6:56.0.
The JV Eights out-distanced the University of Massachusetts-Amherstfor first place in Heat 2 with a time of 6:52.0 to UMass’ 6:53.9.Yale (6:58.20) easily defeated second-place Fordham in the other heat toalso advance to Saturday’s final.
The remaining schools in each the varsity and JV divisions will racethe 2,000-meter course once again on Friday to fill out the remainingpositions in Saturday’s Grand Final.
