Coral Gables, Fla. – Lane Carico established a new school record for kills (36) in a match Friday evening as the University of Miami volleyball team dropped a 3-2 heartbreaker (25-23, 25-22, 21-25, 22-25, 13-15) to Clemson University at the James L. Knight Sports Complex in Coral Gables, Fla.

Carico, a sophomore outside hitter from Manhattan Beach, Calif., did her best to help UM try and bounce back from a 3-2 setback to conference foe Virginia Tech last weekend. The outcome, however, was another tough Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) defeat for the Hurricanes, dropping their third home match of the season.

Miami (8-6, 1-3 ACC) held a 2-0 lead in the match heading into the third set.

The Hurricanes led 8-6 in the third set before Clemson (11-4, 2-2 ACC) went on an 8-2 run sparked by two kills and two blocks from Lia Proctor in order to take a 14-10 edge. UM closed to within 22-19 late in the set, but kills from Alexa Rand and Natalie Patzin was enough to give the Tigers the win, 25-21.

The Tigers hit a whopping .452 clip (15-1-31) in the third set as a team.

In the fourth set, Miami’s Maria Andersson collected one of her five kills on the night to give UM a 9-7 advantage. Clemson would come back to tie the set at 12-all on the strength of Jessica Williams’ shot down the middle.

The set would tie 11 times total before the Tigers used blocks from Rand and Proctor to jump-start a 3-0 run, giving Clemson an 18-15 lead. Following a kill from Carico–one of 10 in the set, UM pulled to within 24-22. However, the `Canes were unable to stop a Patzin kill-off-set from Kelsey Murphy, allowing Clemson the 25-22 win–forcing a decisive fifth set.

Moving into the final set, a kill from Christine Williamson and a block from Ariell Cooke pushed UM out to a 7-2 lead. Carico’s kill down the line gave UM an 8-5 lead as the teams switched sides of the court.

With the set tied for the third time (10-10) following a kill from Clemson’s Rand, Proctor registered back-to-back kills for the Tigers in order to give Clemson a 12-10 lead.

Andersson brought the `Canes to within 12-11 on a kill, and Carico made it 13-12 in favor of Clemson on a kill from the reigning ACC Freshman of the Year. The set would become tied for the fourth time, this time at 13-all, when Clemson was charged with an attack error.

In the end, a kill from Proctor and assisted blocks from the Tigers’ Sandra Adeleye and Jessica Williams gave Clemson the win, 15-13.

With the loss, the Hurricanes fall to 1-3 in five-set matches on the year, dropping their third in as many weekends–their second in a row in league play.

Clemson was led on the night by Proctor’s 19-kill, 12-dig performance. She also tallied five blocks (four assists). Beside her was Adeleye with 18 kills and seven blocks. Setter Murphy collected 56 assists and 17 digs.

Miami was led by Carico’s record-setting performance of 36 kills and 17 digs. Also touching double-digits was Christine Williamson with a career-high 10 kills, while sophomore middle blocker Ali Becker posted 10 kills and four blocks (three assists) in the loss.

Setter Nrithya Sundararaman produced the assists with a team and season-high 58, also tacking on seven digs. Libero Cassie Loessberg sparked the UM defense with a match-high 28 digs.

UM head coach Nicole Lantagne Welch and the Hurricanes will look to rebound on Sunday, Oct. 4 when hosting ACC opponent Georgia Tech at the James L. Knight Sports Complex at 1 p.m.
