March 27, 2008
CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The University of Miami rowing team opens its 2008 spring season this weekend when they travel to Orlando to compete against UCF on Lake Pickett at 8 a.m. First-year head coach Robbie Tenenbaum will lead the Hurricanes in four races over the next week and a half beginning with Saturday’s race and eventually leading up to the ACC Championships, April 19, in Clemson, S.C.<?xml:namespace prefix=”o” ns=”urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office”?>
“Our kids are really pumped up and ready to race and I’m excited to see how well we do in our first true test,” Tenenbaum said. “We know the challenges that lie ahead of us, and are we’re anxious to get out there and compete.”
The Hurricane Varsity 8 features a very young squad, with only one senior and five student-athletes that are in their first year at <?xml:namespace prefix=”st1″ ns=”urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags”?>Miami. The Knights’ 1st Varsity 8 returns six rowers from last year’s squad that placed 16th at the 2007 NCAA Championships.
“We are looking forward to racing a very fast Central Florida team on Saturday,” Tenenbaum added. “UCF emerged as one of the top teams in the nation last year and will be strong test for us to open the season.”
Miami is coming off four exhibition races over the last month in preparation for the season-opener. The `Canes battled Michigan, Feb. 24 in Tampa, before hosting Syracuse, Connecticut and Nova Southeastern the week of March 9-15 in Miami Beach.
“Our winter training has gone really well,” Tenenbaum said. “Our student-athletes put in a lot of hours on land and on the water in preparation for our first race and it really showed in our four scrimmages this past month. I am proud of the way we were able to do multiple `pieces’ and be so successful against other quality teams.”
After this weekend’s trip to Orlando, the `Canes will head to East Lansing, Mich. next weekend to race against Indiana and Notre Dame, Saturday, March 5 before making the short trip to Ypsilanti, Mich. the following day to face host Eastern Michigan.
