April 17, 2008

CORAL GABLES, <?xml:namespace prefix=”st1″ ns=”urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags”?>Fla.– The University of Miami rowing team will participate in its fourth ACC Rowing Championships this weekend when it competes against five other league schools at LakeHartwell in Clemson, S.C. on Saturday.<?xml:namespace prefix=”o” ns=”urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office”?>

The Hurricanes will be racing against crews from BostonCollege, host Clemson, Duke, North Carolina and Virginia. The Cavaliers – who are currently ranked No. 3 in the Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association/USRowing poll — have won the title all eight years the championship has been in existence with No. 17 Clemson and Duke each serving as the runner-up on four occasions.

“We are excited to be a part of one of the best conferences in the country, and looking forward to some great competition,” head coach Robbie Tenenbaum said.

In Miami’s three appearances at the ACC Championships, the Hurricanes finished fourth in 2005, third in 2006 and fourth again last year.

“Our young team has been improving all season long, and I am excited to watch them race on Saturday morning,” Tenenbaum added. “The team is in great spirits and our assistant coaches — Becca Brinker, Julia Gamache and Anna Cohen – along with our athletic trainers – Angie Lawrence and Wes Brown — have really been instrumental in our improvements.”

Miami opened its spring season at UCF on Orlando’s LakePickett where the team would pick up its first win with the Hurricane Varsity Four crew coming in at 7:32.59, nearly six seconds ahead of the Knights.

The following weekend UM traveled to Michigan to battle Indiana and Notre Dame in East Lansing before racing Eastern Michigan the following day in Ypsilanti. The Hurricanes would win five of nine races on the weekend, taking two of three – Varsity Eight and Varsity Four — from the Hoosiers before sweeping EMU.

The 1st Varsity Eight crew of Monika Sajincic, Bethany Krawec, Sarah Medland, Louise Parry, Laura Cordner, Emily Wingrove, bow Tara Eddings, stroke Kelly Amsler and coxswain Shira Kharrazi picked up their first win of the season against the Hoosiers, coming in at 7:46.6, just edging out the IU (7:47.2) by less than a second in an exciting come-from-behind win at the finish.

The Hurricanes’ 2nd Varsity Eight crew also claimed their first win of the spring, coming in at 7:24.83 to EMU’s time of 7:41.05.
