Miami Takes Down Clemson in Volleyball, 3-1

Coral Gables, Fla. – Junior Lane Carico led all players with a season-high 19 kills in helping the University of Miami surge past visiting Clemson University by a count of 3-1 (25-22, 18-28, 25-18, 25-15) in ACC volleyball action on Sunday at the James L. Knight Sports Complex.

With the match tied at one set apiece after intermission, Clemson (11-7, 2-5 Atlantic Coast Conference) led 12-10 almost midway through the frame. Beginning with a kill from freshman Alexandria Johnson, Miami (13-5, 3-4 ACC) embarked upon a 7-0 run that eventually gave the `Canes a 17-12 advantage in the set. Johnson finished with four kills in the frame, as outside hitter Carico led all performers with seven kills and a service ace to lead UM to the 25-18 win.

The Hurricanes controlled the tempo throughout the fourth set, hitting at a .256 clip as a team. Defensively, the `Canes held the Tigers of Clemson to a match-low .095 hitting percentage in the final frame, en route to the 25-15 set and match victory.

Clemson was led on offense by Sandra Adeleye, with the outside hitter recording 16 kills, four blocks (assisted) and hitting at a .417 percentage in the match. Also in double-figures for kills was Serenat Yaz with 11, and adding 18 digs on defense. Alexa Rand had 10 kills and a match-high seven blocks (assisted).

UM was led by the season-high performance of Carico with 19 kills, 15 digs and three service aces. The double-double was the third consecutive for native of Manhattan Beach, Calif. Junior Ali Becker finished with 10 kills and a team-high four blocks (assisted). Senior Ariell Cooke also touched double-digit kills with 10 – the second consecutive match for her with double-figure kills.

UM redshirt junior setter Katie Gallagher swung at a team-high .417 clip (5k-0e-12ta), as she setup a match-high 44 assists and went low for 15 digs – her sixth double-double on the campaign. The defense was charged by freshman libero Ryan Shaffer with 20 digs, and classmate Taylor Hollins added 11 digs.

Miami will get back to action again on Fri., Oct. 15, when the Hurricanes travel to the University of Maryland in College Park. The match is set to begin at 5:30 p.m.

October is Breast Cancer Awareness month, and the University of Miami is also continuing its drive to support breast cancer awareness through the “Side-Out Foundation” before the `Canes take part in their “Dig Pink” match against Wake Forest on Sun., Oct. 24. Prior to and during the match, the Hurricanes will wear pink warm-up T-shirts, as well as pink ribbons and other apparel during their match against the Demon Deacons.
