Miami Volleyball Falls at Georgia Tech, 3-1

Atlanta, Ga. – Lane Carico supplied 17 kills and 15 digs as the University of Miami fell at Georgia Tech, 3-1 (25-20, 18-25, 19-25, 23-25), in Atlantic Coast Conference volleyball action inside O’Keefe Gymnasium on Saturday night in Atlanta, Ga.

After claiming the opening set by a score of 25-20, Miami (18-8, 8-7 Atlantic Coast Conference) was unable to maintain momentum after using four kills, four digs and a block from junior outside hitter Lane Carico (Manhattan Beach, Calif.) in the frame. UM was also aided by senior middle blocker Ariell Cooke (Oakland, Calif.) and redshirt junior Christine Williamson (Tampa, Fla.) with three kills each.

Cooke finished the night hitting at a team-best .400 percentage.

Georgia Tech (16-11, 9-6 ACC) was able to mount a comeback over the course of the last three sets, riding the strength of Monique Mead and Bailey Hunter for a combined 37 kills. The Yellow Jackets hit .378 in the second frame to knot the match at a set a piece, and concluded with a .304 clip in the fourth frame.

The Rambling Wreck was led on the night by Mead with a match-high 19 kills, adding six digs and five blocks (four assisted). Hunter ended with 18 kills on 36 swings – ending hitting at a match-high .417 clip, adding three assisted blocks. Setter Mary Ashley Tippins supplied Georgia Tech with a match-high 52 assists, as libero Jordan McCullers recorded a match-high 28 digs.

Carico, a two-time All-AVCA East Region performer, led the `Canes with her 11th consecutive double-double, ending with 17 kills and 15 digs – adding two assisted blocks and a service ace. Cooke finished with nine kills, joined by freshman Alexandria Johnson (Tallahassee, Fla.) and Williamson with nine kills as well.

Setter Katie Gallagher (Winter Park, Fla.) finished with 42 assists, nine digs and three kills. Freshman libero Ryan Shaffer (San Jose, Calif.) closed with 14 digs, and junior middle blocker Ali Becker (Katy, Texas) led at the net with three assisted blocks, also staking seven kills, two assists and two digs.

Miami now concludes a four-match road swing, and returns to Coral Gables for its next two matches at the James L. Knight Sports Complex. The `Canes host NC State on Fri., Nov. 12, at 7 p.m. They finish the weekend with UNC on Sun., Nov. 14 at 1 p.m.
