Hurricanes Fall to Virginia in Three Games

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The University of Miami volleyball team went down in a three-game battle to Virginia (29-31, 24-30, 15-30) Friday night at Memorial Gym. With the loss, Miami fall 6-11overall and 3-5 in the ACC.

Senior setter Jill Robinson led the team with 19 assists, while Ciara Michel led with nine kills and seven block assists. Defensively, senior Frannie Savage led the Hurricane squad with nine digs, followed by Lauren Rinderknecht and Ann Gallo with eight digs apiece.

As a team, the Hurricanes led the match with 10 total blocks, over Virginia’s eight and registered 39 defensive digs over the Cavalier’s 30. However UVA dominated offensively putting up 20 more kills than UM with 52 total, and tacking on a .270 hitting percentage over Miami’s .153.

Game one saw 10 tied scores including a match-point before Virginia took the win 31-29 and a 1-0 lead. Miami jumped out to an early 7-4 lead before Virginia rallied to bring the score within one at 10-9. Both teams battled for the lead before Miami tied the score at 17-all from a kill by Ciara Michel, forcing Virginia to take a time-out. UVA went on a seven-point run beginning with a kill by Shannon Davis, putting the Cavalier’s up by five. Virginia led the rest of the way until a bad set by Emily Kirkwood forced the game to a match-point. But two more kills from UVA allowed them to pull away with the win.

An early lead by Virginia put them six points ahead of the Hurricanes with the score at 12-6. Miami rallied back going on a four-point run to put the game within one at 14-15. But the Hurricanes could not keep up with Virginia as the Cavalier’s posted their largest lead at 28-20. Miami posted four more points off of two Hurricane kills and two attack errors by Virginia, forcing Virginia to take their first time-out of the game with the score 28-24. The Cavalier’s went back into the game to take the win 30-24 after posting one more kill along with one more attack error by Miami.

Virginia came out in game three by taking an early 17-9 lead, and never looked back. The Cavalier’s ran away with a 30-15 game win and the match.

The Hurricanes will continue on the road as they take on Virginia Tech tomorrow night at 7:00 p.m. at Cassell Coliseum.
