Williamson Leads Miami Past Maryland, 3-0

Coral Gables, Fla. – Christine Williamson collected a match-high 17 kills and the University of Miami Hurricanes took down the University of Maryland, 3-0 (25-17, 25-16, 25-20), in ACC volleyball action Friday evening at the James L. Knight Sports Complex in Coral Gables, Fla.
Miami (17-11, 10-8 ACC) hit .225 for the match as a team, and collected 43 kills on offense. The Hurricanes used Williamson’s match-high 14 kills in order to sweep the season series from the Terrapins of Maryland (13-18, 5-13 ACC) for the second consecutive season.
After taking the opening set (25-17), the `Canes hit a .300 clip (12-3-30) in the second set, using a 7-2 run sparked by senior outside hitter Maria Andersson and sophomore Williamson, to claim a 14-10 lead midway through. UM trailed early-on, 8-7, following a kill from Maryland’s Lisa Scott.
The `Canes rode kills across the board from Williamson, Lane Carico and senior Genny Mayhew to close-out the set on an 8-2 run. Miami claimed the 25-16 set-victory with a pair of blocks coming from Lici McGee and Andersson.
In the third set, Williamson supplied the kills for Miami with a set-high six, and Carico added four more as the `Canes broke open a tight contest midway through. Maryland used four kills from Katie Usher to keep things close though trailing, 12-10. The Hurricanes then responded with a 6-3 run, capped off by Mayhew’s kill off the set of freshman Nrithya Sundararaman. That advanced Miami’s lead at 18-13.
With Miami leading 24-16 and serving for the match, the Terps closed to within 24-20 as Brittney Grove and Kara Bates picked up kills in a furious comeback attempt by the visitors from College Park. In the end, Miami was able to use another Williamson kill across the middle to earn the 25-20 set- and match-victory.
Maryland was led on the evening by Lisa Scott with a team-high 11 kills, also adding four blocks (two solo). Usher put down seven kills and two solo blocks, and libero Sam Rosario supplied the defense with 13 digs.
The `Canes were topped by Williamson’s 14-kill performance, as she added three digs. Carico recorded her 17th double-double of the season with 11 kills and 17 digs, adding four blocks (two solo) and two service aces. Setter Sundararaman had 30 assists and four digs, while libero Cassie Loessberg pulled in a match-high 23 digs while dishing out two assists.
The Hurricanes return home Sunday, November 22 when they play host to Boston College on “Senior Day” at 1 p.m., back at the James L. Knight Sports Complex. The `Canes will honor seniors Maria Andersson, Cassie Loessberg, Genny Mayhew and Griffin Udelson, all playing in their second-to-last home match wearing the Orange and Green.
