Gallagher, Johnson Named to All-ACC Academic Volleyball Team

Feb. 25, 2011

Greensboro, N.C. – Junior Katie Gallagher and freshman Alexandria Johnson have been named to the 2010 All-ACC Academic Volleyball Team, announced Friday morning by Commissioner John D. Swofford from the Atlantic Coast Conference office in Greensboro, N.C.

Gallagher, a 5-foot-11 setter from Winter Park, Fla., is making her first appearance to the All-ACC Academic Team. She finished the 2010 campaign competing in her first NCAA Volleyball Tournament after missing the 2009 Tournament due to injury.

Gallagher is only the second player in school history to amass 3,000-plus assists in a career, registering 3,955 to this point – second all-time at UMiami. In helping the Hurricanes to consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances (2010, ’09), she was named to the All-AVCA East Region Team. On the year, Gallagher amassed 1,211 assists (10.72 per set), placing her fourth in the ACC in that department. She ended the year hitting at a .325 clip with 110 kills, adding 15 service aces and 298 digs (2.64 per set). At the net, she finished tied for third on the squad in blocks (53). Averaging over 1,000 assists per season thus far in her career, she needs just 982 assists next year to pass Jill Robinson (2003-06) for first place on the UM charts.

Alex Johnson, a 6-foot-0 outside hitter/right side from Tallahassee, Fla., played and started in all 32 matches for the `Canes in 2010. She ended the year with 205 kills (1.71 per set) and hitting at a .226 clip. She was tied for third on the team in blocks with 53 (52 assisted / one solo), in addition to 273 digs (2.28 per set). Johnson concluded the year with 256 total points (2.13 per set). Johnson was the only freshman to play and start every match for the Hurricanes last year, and the only one to do so overall since Lane Carico in 2008.

Duke junior middle blocker/outside hitter Sophia Dunworth was named as the ACC Volleyball Scholar-Athlete of the Year.

All 12 conference schools were represented on the 2010 All-ACC Academic Volleyball Team, led by Duke with five selections, followed by Maryland with four. Florida State and Georgia Tech each had three student-athletes honored. Boston College, Clemson, Miami, North Carolina, NC State, Virginia Tech and Wake Forest each garnered two recognitions, while Virginia had one.

The ACC Scholar-Athlete of the Year award was established in September 2007 and is awarded annually to the top junior or senior student-athlete in his/her respective sports. Candidates for the award must have maintained a 3.0 grade point average for their career as well as a 3.0 for each of the last two semesters.

To be eligible for All-ACC Academic Team consideration, a student-athlete must have earned a 3.00 grade point average for the previous semester and maintained a 3.00 cumulative average during his/her academic career.
