Hurricane selected as Co-Rookie of the Week

CORAL GABLES, Fla. (www.hurricanesports.com) – – The University of Miami volleyball team’s freshman middle blocker Karla Johnson (Houston, Texas/Westfield HS) was selected as Co-Rookie of the Week by the BIG EAST Conference Monday.

Johnson, who has been among the conference top 10 in blocks all season, helped the second-year team win its first two BIG EAST Conference matches over the weekend.

In the Hurricanes’ 3-1 victory over Boston College and their 3-0 defeat of Providence, Johnson managed a .539 hitting percentage, leveling 23 kills on both opponents while being issued just two errors.

She had no errors in the win over Providence and was credited with a .650 hitting percentage, a career high.Johnson also led the match in kills with 13.

Johnson is the second Hurricane freshman to receive BIG EAST Co- Rookie of the Week honors. Earlier this season, Margie Young (Santa Monica, Calif./Marymount HS) was selected as a Co-Rookie of the Week when she tied a conference record for assist (73) in the Hurricanes’ 3-2 victory over arch-rival Florida State.
