Rowing Opens Fall Season Saturday At Nova Southeastern

Oct. 5, 2007

CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The University of Miami rowing team begins its 2007 fall season Saturday morning when the team makes the short trip to Hollywood to take on Nova Southeastern in an early season test for both schools.

“We’re excited to be able to go up and do pieces with Nova Southeastern tomorrow morning,” head coach Robbie Tenenbaum said. “Since I arrived here in Coral Gables a few months ago, I have been impressed with how excited our team has been to get better. They’ve been working very hard to become more physically fit and better technical rowers as well.”

Each school will run four-minute pieces in a controlled environment to gauge each squad’s progress heading into the fall season.

“I have a lot of respect for Nova Southeastern’s coaches and what they’re doing,” Tenenbaum said. “They are a fairly new program but have been amongst the top three or four Division II rowing programs in the country since their program began in 2003.”

The Hurricanes are coming off a year in which they finished in fourth place at the ACC Rowing Championships in Clemson, S.C.

“This weekend will be a great opportunity for both programs to do pieces in a controlled setting against someone in a different color uniform, Tenenbaum said. “It will also give us a change to see how are practices have been working out. My assistants, Becca Brinker and Julia Gamache, in addition to our graduate assistant Anna Cohen, have been a tremendous help in getting our team ready to race.”

UM will return to the water again next weekend when the team participates in the 15th Annual Head of Indian Creek, Oct. 14, at the Ronald Shane Watersports Center in Miami Beach.
