Hurricane Volleyball Set To Host Alumni Match

CORAL GABLES, Fla. –The University of Miami volleyball team will host its third annual Alumni Match on Saturday, August 18, welcoming back former players in an exhibition match at the Knight Sports Complex. Twelve former Hurricanes, including all four seniors from last year’s squad, will take on the 2007 team in a best-of-five match beginning at 3:30 p.m.
“Being able to play an alumni match is a great opportunity for us to experiment with our lineups and finally play against an opponent when our team can all play on the same side,” UM head coach Nicole Lantagne Welch said. “We’ll be able to knock some of the rust off and really get a great preparation for next week’s matches.”
The 2007 team is comprised of two seniors, three juniors, four sophomores and five freshmen that will be making their first appearance in a Miami uniform. Led by Preseason All-ACC selection Ciara Michel, the Hurricanes will use Saturday’s match as an opportunity to work together as one unit, while at the same time reunite with some of the program’s all-time greats.
“Having the alumni come back is always a special time. It is great to see the players that started off this program and being able to listen to their words of wisdom as they have moved on is a great thing for our current players,” said Lantagne Welch.
The Hurricanes will open the regular season at home next weekend when they host the Orange and Green Challenge at the Knight Sports Complex. Miami will welcome Hofstra, Jacksonville and Butler in the round-robin style tournament, Aug. 24-25.
“The team has been working very hard and is eager to play an actual match,” said Lantagne Welch. “We are all anxious to see how we look out on the floor in an actual match so that we can work on the little things before next week’s opener.”
The match is open to both students and the general public.
