Hurricanes' Basketball Banquet Set For April 24

CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The University of Miami men’s basketball teamwill hold its annual awards banquet on Monday, April 24 at the Biscayne BayMarriott.
The evening will begin with a reception at 6:15 p.m. followed bydinner at 7 p.m. Tickets for the event are $50 per person or $400 for atable of eight. For more information or to make reservations, please contactthe Hurricane Club at 305-284-6699.
This season the Hurricanes recorded their third straight NCAAtournament appearance and reached the Sweet Sixteen for the first time inschool history. Miami tied the school-record for victories with a 23-11overall mark and finished 13-3 in conference play to earn a share of the1999-2000 BIG EAST regular-season championship.
The evening’s guest speaker will be college basketball analyst BobWenzel.
Wenzel, who just completed his third season in broadcasting, hasserved as a college basketball game analyst for CBS, ESPN and ESPN RegionalTelevision since 1997. At this year’s Final Four in Indianapolis, Wenzelserved as the color commentator for CBS television’s international feed thatwent out to over 120 nations worldwide.
Prior to moving to the broadcast booth Wenzel spent 15 seasons as acollegiate head coach at both Jacksonville (1981-87) and Rutgers (1988-97).
While at Jacksonville Wenzel guided the Dolphins to two postseasonappearances including a NCAA Tournament berth in 1986. He was named the 1986Coach of the Year in Florida by the Florida Sportswriters Association aswell as District 6 Coach of the Year by the National Association ofBasketball Coaches. He also received the Most Courageous Award from theNational Sportswriters Association after returning from a life threateningcerebral aneurysm during the 1985-86 campaign.
Wenzel went on to coach at Rutgers in 1988 and led his alma mater tofour post-season berths including NCAA Tournament appearances in 1989 and1991. In his first season at Rutgers, Wenzel guided the Scarlet Knights toone of the greatest turnarounds in NCAA history taking a team that won justseven games the previous season and leading them to an 18-13 record and theAtlantic 10 Conference Championship. For his efforts Wenzel was named the1988-89 Atlantic 10 Coach of the Year.
