Hurricanes Drop Final Road Match at Georgia Tech

ATLANTA, Ga. – Maria Andersson nearly reached a double-double in recording 10 kills and nine digs and Katie Gallagher tallied 48 assists but the Hurricanes were out-hit .364-to-.149 as Miami lost to Georgia Tech, 3-1, Friday night at the O’Keefe Gymnasium.

Ciara Michel also had 10 kills for UM in addition to four block assists while Genny Mayhew recorded a match-high 18 kills but committed 15 errors in doing so. Ashley Woods recorded seven kills and a team-best five block assists while Ariell Cooke and Gallagher each finished with four. Gallagher, who went error-free in eight attempts, also chipped in with six digs on the defensive end. Cassie Loessberg, a night after become UM’s single-season dig leader, led the team with nine digs.

With the loss, Miami falls to 12-17 overall and 6-14 in Atlantic Coast Conference action while Georgia Tech moves to 20-9 and 14-5 in the league.

Four different Yellow Jackets finished in double figure kills led by Chrissy DeMichelis’ 16. Nikki Kaminskas recorded 15 kills, Talisa Kellog added 14 and Ulrike Stegemann finished the night with 12. Kaminskas had a near flawless night on the defensive end, recording just one error in 20 attempts in hitting a team-best .700. She also played well on the defensive end, adding a match-high eight total blocks. Allie Niekamp tallied 49 assists to lead the GT offense while Michelle Kandell led the defense with 15 digs.

The `Canes fell behind early, losing the first two games 30-15 and 30-18. UM played better in the third game, winning 30-28 but the Yellow Jackets regained control in the fourth game, taking a 30-18 win.

Miami returns home this week for the final two games of the season the day before and the day after Thanksgiving. The `Canes will take on North Carolina Wednesday, Nov. 21 at 4 p.m. before hosting N.C. State Friday, Nov. 23 at 1 p.m.
