Miami Signs Lawrence Gilbert

April 18, 2006

Coral Gables, Fla. (hurricanesports.com) – Head men’s basketball coach Frank Haith announces the signing of 6-7 swingman Lawrence Gilbert (New Orleans, La.) to a national letter of intent to attend the University of Miami this fall.

“Lawrence (Gilbert) is a multi-talented player who can do a lot of things on the basketball court,” says Haith. “He can score, rebound, pass and defend. He has excellent court vision for a player his size and makes everyone around him better. He will be a tremendous addition to our program.”

Gilbert (6-7, 175) averaged 16.4 points and 12.7 rebounds while playing for Houston (Texas) Wheatley High School last season. He earned Class 4A All-Region III honors by the Texas Association of Basketball Coaches and led all area players in rebounding.

A native of New Orleans, Gilbert relocated from L.W. Higgins High School to Wheatley after Hurricane Katrina.

Gilbert becomes the fourth player to sign with the Hurricanes. Miami inked three players during the early signing period in November including 6-8 forward Dwayne Collins (Miami Senior), 6-2 guard James Dews (Westchester, Ohio) and 6-10 forward Fabio Nass (Catarina, Brazil).
