CORAL GABLES, <?xml:namespace prefix=”st1″ ns=”urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags”?>Fla. – A week after taking seven-of-eight games against FAU and WichitaState in its first exhibition match of 2008, the University of Miami volleyball team split six games with Florida this past weekend in the team’s first home contest this spring at the Knight Sports Complex.<?xml:namespace prefix=”o” ns=”urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office”?>

With five games being played to 25 and one being played to 15, the two teams each won three games apiece, with the Hurricanes taking the first, fourth and sixth games over the Gators.

“I was really impressed with how well we played this past weekend,” sophomore outside hitter Genny Mayhew said. “We had great intensity and focus and despite them having a few inches and a few pounds on us, we were able to go out there and win the ball-control game.”

Miami went up 1-0 with a 25-19 win in the first game before Florida won 25-16 and 25-17 in the next two. The `Canes would tie it up with a 25-20 win in game four, the Gators re-took the lead with a 25-21 win in game five before UM took game six, 15-11.

“I was a really fun match,” Mayhew added. “And it was great to compete again in our home gym and come out playing so well against a quality team in Florida.”

Florida, a squad that ended the 2007 season ranked as the No. 8 team in the country, finished the fall with a record of 29-3, winning its 17th-consecutive Southeastern Conference title and reaching the NCAA semifinals for the 16th time in the last 17 years.

Playing to 25 each game as opposed to 30 is a new implementation to the NCAA’s new scoring system for the 2008 season .

The Hurricanes will remain at home this weekend when they host a six-team tournament featuring UCF, FAU, Berry, Nova Southeastern and Lynn Saturday beginning at 9 a.m. They will then close out the spring season at the Florida Division I Collegiate Beach Tournament, April 19 in Siesta Key, Fla.
