Hurricanes Go Down to Clemson in Four Games

Clemson, S.C. – The university of Miami women’s volleyball team fell to ACC rival Clemson, 1-3 (40-38, 24-30, 23-30, 20-30), Friday evening at Jervey Gymnasium. The Hurricanes fall 4-9 overall and 1-3 in the ACC.

The Hurricanes posted their highest score in a single game this season with 40 points over the Tigers.

Senior setter Jill Robinson led the match with a season high 57 assists and registered 14 digs, making this her fifth double-double of the season. Miami was also led by junior middle blocker Ciara Michel posted a career high 22 kills along with four total blocks.

Freshman Genny Mayhew posted 11 kills and seven digs, while Ashley Woods and Lauren Rinderknecht posted 10 kills apiece. Senior Frannie Savage contributed seven kills and five digs.

Game one proved to be the highest scoring game of the match, and the highest for the Hurricanes this season. The Tigers jumped out to an early 16-10 lead. Miami rallied back and tied 18 all, amongst a game high of 18 tied scores, to take their first lead. Clemson caught up at 28 all, before a kill by Ashley Woods gave Miami their first game point. However, an attack error by the Hurricanes kept the Tigers in the game, and both teams battled for the win tying 10 more times. At 38 all, one last kill by Mayhew and an attack error by Clemson’s Lia Proctor, gave UM the win 40-38. Miami’s offense was led by Ciara Michel with eight kills and Jill Robinson’s 18 assists. Defensively, Genny Mayhew and freshman libero Cassie Loessberg contributed five digs apiece.

In game two, Clemson led by as much as six points at 20-14. Miami tried to rally back, bringing the score within two points at 20-22, but the Hurricanes could not keep up as Clemson led the rest of the way to take the win at 30-24.

Clemson jumped out on top once again in game three, to capture a six point lead at 20-14, and never looked back. The hurricanes posted 14 kills, and only had a .258 hitting percentage to Clemson’s .455. The Tigers ran with the lead and went on to claim the win at 30-23.

The Tigers held UM at a .077 hitting percentage in game four. Clemson took an early 7-3 lead and dominated the rest of the game, to capture a 30-20win and the match.
