May 17, 2008

OAK RIDGE, Tenn. – University of Miami’s 1st Varsity Eight crew is one of four UM crews advancing into the “C” finals on Sunday after recording a first place finish in a semifinal race Saturday at the 2008 Aramark Sprints/Central and South Region Championships on Milton Hill Lake.

The 1st Varsity Eight crew of coxswain Shira Kharrazi, stroke Louise Parry, Laura Cordner, Nicola Saner, Bethany Krawec, Kelly Amsler, Emily Wingrove, Monika Sajincic and bow Karalyn Van Aken beat out crews from UCF, Murray State, Kansas and North Carolina in one of two C/D semifinal races, coming in at 6:59.000, just edging out second-place UCF, that came across at 7:01.700.

Indiana – a team UM beat by less than a second on April 5 – placed first in the other C/D semifinal, finishing in a time of 6:53.600 to beat out second-place Duke by over seven seconds.

Also in the semifinals, UM’s 2nd Varsity Eight crew of coxswain Christina Crocco, stroke Stephanie Parrish, Marleena Eyre, Caitlin Augustin, Rachael Sporko, Sarah Medland, Hannah McKay, Olivia Arkell and bow Tara Eddings placed third behind first-place Kansas State and second-place Indiana in a time of 7:16.770.

“I’m really pleased with the way we raced today, especially in the afternoon semifinals in the 1st and 2nd Varsity Eight races,” head coach Robbie Tenenbaum said. “Both crews beat out teams we had lost to earlier this season, a great sign of a team that continues to get better.”

Miami will be competing in four “C” finals on Sunday. UM’s first race in the finals is set for 9:42 a.m. when the 1st Varsity Eight crew will battle Duke, Kansas State, Indiana, UCF and Murray State. The 2nd Varsity Eight crew will race shortly thereafter at 9:56 a.m. against Duke, Kansas, Kansas State, Indiana and Iowa before the Varsity Four crew of coxswain Ana Mantilla, stroke Julianne Parker, Stacey Kerr, Molly Thornton and bow Courtney Guy goes up against North Carolina, Kansas, Indiana, Iowa, SMU and Eastern Michigan at 10:10 a.m.

“I’m looking forward to Sunday’s finals,” Tenenbaum added. “We are going up against some solid teams in all four races but I know our crews will be ready to go.”

UM’s Open 4 crew of coxswain Heather Hollembeak, stroke Alexa McCanick, Liz Teel, Megan James and bow Ally Hodgkins will battle two teams from Tennessee, Iowa, Kansas and Louisville also in the last “C” final of the morning at 10:52 a.m.

Earlier in the day during the preliminary rounds, the Hurricanes placed fourth in their 1st Varsity Eight and Varsity Four heats, fifth in their 2nd Varsity Eight heat and sixth in their Open 4 heat.
