Nov. 11, 2005

CORAL GABLES, Fla. – Head men’s basketball coach Frank Haith announces the signing of 6-8 forward Dwayne Collins (Miami Senior), 6-2 guard James Dews (Westchester, Ohio) and 6-10 forward Fabio Nass (Catarina, Brazil) to national letters of intent to attend the University of Miami next fall.

Considered one the state’s top prospects, Collins was a second-team Class 6A All-State selection by the Florida Sports Writers Association last season after averaging 19.6 points, 13.0 rebounds, 4.3 blocks and 2.5 assists per game.

He posted 22 points and 15 rebounds to help lead Miami Senior High School to the 2005 Class 6A State title. Collins earned All-Tournament honors in 2005 and was named to the All-Dade County team by the Miami Herald.

“Dwayne (Collins) is a very strong post player who will give us another physical presence in the paint,” said Haith. “He defends the post very well and can really score around the basket.”

Collins becomes the fourth local product to sign with the Hurricanes over the last two seasons.

Dews, entering his senior season at Lakota East High School, earned All-State honors last season after averaging 20.3 points, seven rebounds and six assists per game. He shot 47 percent from three-point range and 86 percent from the line last season.

Dews was named the 2004-05 GMC and Butler County Player of the Year and has been a first-team All-GMC selection the last three seasons. He enters his senior season ranked second on the Lakota School District’s all-time scoring list with 1,297 points.

“James (Dews) gives us another very skilled perimeter player,” said Haith. “He is a tremendous shooter who has the ability to manufacture shots when the offense breaks down.”

Rivals.com ranks Dews as the No. 4 player in Ohio, regardless of position, while Scout.com rates him as the No. 19 shooting guard in the nation.

Nass, who will have two years of eligibility remaining, is playing the 2005-06 season at Arkansas-Fort Smith Junior College, the No. 1 ranked junior college team in the nation. Last season he played at Dixie College of Utah where he averaged 7.2 points and five rebounds per game.

“Fabio (Nass) is a talented post player who can do a lot of things on the basketball court,” said Haith. “He can score around the basket, hit the outside jumper, rebound and defend. He will also give us added experience having played two seasons of basketball at the junior college level.”
