For the second consecutive match, freshman Maria Andersson led the team in kills, recording 14 to go along with 17 digs. Fellow freshman Katie Gallagher recorded 51 assists and 15 digs, reaching the 50-assist mark for the second time in the season’s first three matches.

Maria Andersson is playing the best we have seen and I hope it is just a sign of things to come with her overall play,” Nicole Lantagne Welch said. “Ciara Michel also played a great match on both sides of the ball, blocking and attacking.”

Michel finished just shy of a double-double with 11 kills and 8 total blocks. Bridget Bomhack had a solid, all-around match for UM (2-1), finishing with 13 kills, four assists, four aces, 18 digs and 3 block assists.

Cassie Loessberg led five Canes in double-figure digs, collecting a match-high 22. As a team the Canes finished with 90 digs, setting a new school record for a four-game match with the previous high of 85 set against Boston College on Sept. 28, 2002.

“Ninety digs in a four-game match is just a tribute to our team’s effort with so many people coming up with big plays for us,” said Lantagne Welch.

Butler (1-2) was led by the duo of Jessica Wolfe and Porshia Allen offensively. Wolfe finished with a team-high 14 kills while Allen added recorded 13. Nina Inac (20 digs) and Michelle DeGeeter (six total blocks) were leaders defensively for the Bulldogs.

Miami picked up a win in the first game of the tournament’s final match with a nine-point win to take the early lead. In game two, Butler was able to come out on top late after the two teams battled closely throughout, winning the last four points to even the match at 1-1. UM went back up with a close 30-28 victory in game three, with the trio of Andersson, Mayhew and Ariell Cook combining on 13 of the team’s 16 kills. The two teams were notched at 20 in game four before the Hurricanes closed out the game, match and tournament with a 10-3 run.

“We played our best match of the weekend tonight and hopefully that is a sign of things to come,” Lantagne Welch said.

Miami will return to action next weekend when the team hits the road to play in the Marquette Kick-Off Tournament in Milwaukee, Wis. UM will face host Marquette on Friday, Aug. 31 at 7 p.m. before taking on UT-Arlington and Oakland on Saturday, Sept. 1.
