Cory Young coaches the throws at the University of Miami, joining the Hurricanes in the fall of 2012 and tallying 14 years of service in Coral Gables. During his tenure, Miami throwers have produced one NCAA individual champion, 23 ACC individual throwing championships and 42 All-America honors while establishing or improving school records across the throwing events.

Young’s program reached a national milestone in 2025 when Devoux Deysel won the NCAA men’s javelin championship with a throw of 81.75m, becoming Miami’s first men’s outdoor individual national champion since 1996. Deysel entered the NCAA Championships after winning his second consecutive ACC javelin title with a school-record 82.35m. He was also named the 2025 ACC Outdoor Track & Field Scholar-Athlete of the Year.

In 2026, transfer Tania Da Silva captured the ACC indoor weight throw championship with a mark of 21.78m and led a Miami sweep of the podium, with Jocelyn Pringle earning silver at 21.54m and Calea Jackson taking bronze at 21.39m. Da Silva advanced to the NCAA Indoor Championships, while Jackson qualified for the NCAA Outdoor Championships in the discus. Desmond Coleman added an ACC outdoor bronze medal in the discus and improved his weight throw best to 21.28m, the fifth-best mark in Miami history. Freshman Tyson Schiele also made an immediate impact, winning his collegiate javelin debut with a personal-best 73.29m and earning ACC Freshman of the Week honors.

The 2024 season showcased the breadth of Young’s event development as Miami produced three ACC champions and three First-Team All-Americans in the throws. Milton Ingraham II won the ACC discus championship, finished seventh at the NCAA Championships and established a Miami record of 60.66m. Deysel and Deisiane Teixeira swept the ACC men’s and women’s javelin titles after both establishing Miami records during their first seasons as Hurricanes. Teixeira went on to earn First-Team All-America honors and finished the season with a Miami record of 56.03m.

Athlete development has been a hallmark of Young’s tenure. Décio Andrade developed into a three-time ACC champion and three-time First-Team All-American while establishing Miami records of 73.77m in the hammer and 22.54m in the weight throw. In three seasons before Miami, Andrade surpassed 70 meters in the hammer three times; during two seasons under Young, he exceeded 70 meters 11 times.

Hannah Hall developed into an 18.03m school-record shot putter after entering Miami as approximately a 14-meter freshman. Hall won both the 2023 ACC indoor and outdoor shot put championships and finished eighth at the NCAA Outdoor Championships to earn First-Team All-America honors.

Debbie Ajagbe became one of Miami’s most versatile throwers, earning nine audited All-America honors and four ACC individual titles while developing the hammer and weight throw after arriving at Miami without previous experience in those events. Young’s development model has similarly helped athletes such as Lea Johnson and Zakiya Rashid develop new events after arriving in Coral Gables.

Earlier in Young’s Miami tenure, throwers including Precious Ogunleye, Tiffany Okieme, Carlos Mangum, Gian Piero Ragonesi, Kevin Arreaga and Daniel Polinski helped establish the foundation for the program’s sustained conference and national presence. Young has coached athletes across the shot put, discus, hammer, weight throw and javelin, with Hurricanes consistently advancing to ACC and NCAA championship competition.

Young’s tenure has also coincided with significant team success. Miami has won five ACC women’s team championships during his time in Coral Gables—indoor titles in 2016, 2017 and 2019 and outdoor titles in 2018 and 2022. The Hurricanes’ men finished 10th at the 2024 NCAA Outdoor Championships with 22 points, the highest finish and most points in program history, while the 2017 women tied for eighth at the NCAA Indoor Championships with 18 points.

Young’s coaching experience extends to the international level. In 2014, he was selected to the United States staff for the IAAF World Junior Championships in Eugene, Oregon, where he coached women’s throws and multi-events.

Across more than a decade at Miami, Young’s throwers have developed into NCAA champions, ACC champions, NCAA finalists, All-Americans and school-record holders. His coaching approach emphasizes long-term athlete development, technical mastery, physical preparation and competitive performance within a culture centered on accountability, toughness and excellence.
