As A Junior (1969-70)
Junior center from Atlanta, Ga… Pre-Law… age 22… hgt 6-8… wgt. 230… letter one. Ron saw service as a reserve last year and displayed potential as an excellent rebounder. His biggest splash in scoring came when he tallied six points against Pittsburgh in the Hurricane Classic, a game UM won by two points. He contributed five important rebounds in the Panther clash and came up with six more against Florida in the Sunshine Classic.
As a Sophomore (1968-69)
Sophomore center from Atlanta, Ga… Pre-Law…age 21… hgt 6-8…wgt 230…Welch did not play basketball until his junior year in high school. His intense desire, tabs him as a future sparkler. Coach Godfrey rates the Georgian as an athlete with high potential. Ron sat out last season when he transferred from Clemson at the end of his freshman year. Big, strong and a real hustler, the hard-working Welch is bound to play a lot of basketball for Miami this year, though probably not as a starter
Freshman Year (1967-68)
Sat out the year when he transferred from Clemson at the end of his senior year.
High School: Did not start playing basketball until his junior year at Briar Cliff High in Atlanta. As a senior, his 18 point average and 20 point rebound credentials carried his prep school into the finals of the state tournament. Ron is big, strong, and moves well enough to make his presence known. He made the All-Regional and All-State teams in high school, where he was coached by Jack Hambrick.
