Miami Takes Down Syracuse, 3-1
CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The No. 15-ranked University of Miami volleyball team (19-4, 9-3 ACC) defeated the Syracuse Orange (13-9, 5-7 ACC), 3-1, on Sunday afternoon at the Knight Sports Complex.
The Hurricanes tallied 67 kills, 74 digs and eight aces. Senior Flormarie Heredia Colon led the team with 33 kills, while redshirt sophomore Ariana Rodriguez notched a double-double with 48 assists and 11 digs.
The match started tight, tied at 10 with four early kills from Heredia Colon. As the Hurricanes pulled away, Syracuse hung in for a 4-0 run to even it at 17. The teams battled heading into extra points, but Syracuse ultimately took the opening set, 29-27.
Miami dominated in set two on a 9-1 run with Sonja Danilovic behind the service to lead 19-8. Logan Wiley extended the lead with a block and kill for the 23-9 lead. The Hurricanes earned the set, 25-12, to even the match.
The third set stayed close as Miami led 14-12 with Heredia Colon earning seven kills. Syracuse fought back to be within two, 23-21, after a 4-0 run, but with 19 kills, Miami took the narrow set win, 25-23.
The Hurricanes started off set four with Rodriguez’s 100th career ace and went up 10-3, before the Orange notched six straight points to be within one. Miami kept the momentum as freshman Amina N’Diaye a pair of kills to secure the final set, 25-19.
Miami will face in-state rival Florida State on Wednesday at the Knight Sports Complex.
