Swimming Dominates First Home Dual Meet
CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The University of Miami picked up a win in its dual meet home opener Friday afternoon, toppling visiting Florida Southern, 192-66, at the Whitten Center Pool.
Coming off a split of a tri-meet last time out vs. Rutgers and Arkansas, the Hurricanes dominated the visitors from start to finish in a commandeering victory.
Miami’s ‘A’ entry in the 200-yard medley relay – comprised of Leah Treglia, Isabelle Videment, Ashlyn Massey and Addy Vonderahe – cruised to a win in a time of 1:41.88 to set the tone for the afternoon.
Veteran Kate Sommerstad picked up a win in the 1,000-yard freestyle (10:18.29) ahead of teammate Phoebe Mayo (10:19.49), and Massey added more early points for the Hurricanes in the 200-yard free (1:47.17) with a first-place finish.
Right behind Massey were freshman teammates Sophie Lenze (1:50.96) and Ines Mahmoudi (1:51.68).
Videment posted a win in the 100-yard backstroke (56.42) while Zofia Sobczak did the same in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:04.42), finishing just ahead of Florida Southern’s Alexa Paredes, who took second.
Veteran Savannah Barr won the 200-yard butterfly (1:59.78) before Vonderahe touched the wall in a time of 23.40 to win the 50-yard freestyle, ahead of teammate Brooke Murphy (24.12).
Sobczak won the 100-yard freestyle (50.98) while Videment was second (51.05), and Sommerstad added a second victory, this time in the 200-yard backstroke (2:03.05) ahead of Jemma Burns (2:05.47).
Massey had a strong showing to win the 500-yard freestyle (4:51.12) in the final portion of the meet, while Barr continued the late momentum with her second win of the day in the 100-yard butterfly (54.34). Videment finished her impressive day by winning the 200-yard IM in a time of 2:02.77.
The Hurricanes’ top entry in the 400-yard freestyle concluded the meet in sparkling fashion, capturing the event in a time of 3:21.97.
Miami continues its season from Nov. 18-21 at the Hawkeye Invite on the campus of the University of Iowa.
