Hurricanes Earn Five Set Win Over Hokies
CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The University of Miami volleyball team (16-4, 6-3 ACC) took down the Virginia Tech Hokies (9-11, 1-8 ACC), 3-2, on Friday night at the Knight Sports Complex.
The Hurricanes tallied a season-high 62 kills, 50 digs, eight blocks and eight aces. Senior Flormarie Heredia Colon led the team with 37 kills and 11 digs, while redshirt sophomore Ariana Rodriguez matched her career-high 50 assists along with 11 digs.
Set one started with errors on both sides of the net, but with an early 10-5 lead for Miami. The Hokies kept fighting to tie it at 15-all after a 4-0 run. The Hurricanes then went on their own run to lead 21-19 with kills from Amina N’Diaye and Logan Wiley. After a kill and ace from Heredia Colon, Miami secured set one 25-23.
The Hurricanes got off on a 4-0 start to lead 12-6 and maintained the advantage with kills around the court from Heredia Colon, N’Diaye and Wiley. As Miami hit .571 as a team, they took set two, 25-17.
Virginia Tech jumped ahead 12-8, but Miami came back to tie at 14 with a kill from Jazmin Vergara. The Hurricanes kept it going for a 5-0 run and cut the lead 18-23 with four kills from Heredia Colon. The Hokies closed out the third set, 25-22, to keep the match alive.
Set four was tight as the Hokies led 12-9 and continued for the 19-16 lead hitting. 444 as a team. Miami chipped away to end in four but fell 25-20 to head to a fifth set.
Miami started 4-1 with Wiley behind the service line and held the lead throughout the set. With three kills from Heredia Colon, a block from Simone Baskin and back-to-back kills from N’Diaye, the Hurricanes notched it 15-3 on a 9-0 run.
The Hurricanes will remain home to host Virginia on Sunday.
