Hurricanes Drop Five-Set Battle to Cal

BERKELEY, Calif. – The University of Miami volleyball team (15-3, 5-2 ACC) fell to the Cal Golden Bears (6-11, 3-4 ACC) on Thursday night at the Haas Pavilion.

The Hurricanes tallied 50 kills, 35 digs, seven blocks and 10 aces. Senior Flormarie Heredia Colon earned 28 kills on a .254 clip, while sophomore Logan Wiley secured five blocks.

The match opened on a 5-0 run with kills from Heredia Colon and freshman Mariam Mushkudiani. Following a solo block and two aces from Dalia Wilson, Miami went on another run to extend the lead, 18-8. Cal fought back for the 6-1 run, but Miami ultimately took the opening set, 25-16.

Set two was close, as Miami only led 10-8 but then ran away on a 8-1 run with two blocks and a kill from Logan Wiley block and two kills from Wilson to go up 18-9. As the Golden Bears hit .088, the Hurricanes earned set two, 25-14.

Cal started on a 3-0 run for their first lead of the match until the Hurricanes regained the lead 12-11 after five kills from Heredia Colon in the set. The Golden Bears once again earned consecutive points and took set three, 25-19.

Amina N’Diaye put the Hurricanes on a 4-0 run lead 13-9 following Miami’s ninth ace of the match. Cal fought back to take the lead 20-18 despite kills from Heredia Colon, Rodriguez and Mushkudiani and evened the match with a 25-22 set win.

The Golden Bears held the 8-6 lead to switch sides in the fifth set until kills from N’Diaye and Heredia Colon tied it at eight. Cal took the final set, 15-12.

Miami will face No. 5 Stanford on Sunday.
