
Miami Falls to No. 10 SMU, 3-1
CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The University of Miami volleyball team (15-2, 5-1 ACC) fell to No. 10 SMU Mustangs (12-4, 4-2 ACC) on Sunday afternoon at the Knight Sports Complex.
The Hurricanes tallied 39 kills, 33 digs and six aces. Senior Flormarie Heredia Colon led the team with 19 kills, while redshirt sophomore Ariana Rodriguez paced the team with 25 assists.
The Mustangs led 15-8 to start the first set on a 7-0 scoring run. The Mustangs hit .368 to take set one, 25-12. The second set was close throughout. SMU led 10-8 but Miami tied it at 16-all with kills all around the court. With another ace from Feliciano and the Hurricanes hitting .296, Miami tied it at two-sets all for 25-21 set win.
SMU opened with 5-0 run to lead 4-1 and held 11-6 lead. Miami fought for the set, but as the Mustangs hit .571 as a team with four aces, they took the set 25-14.
The final set started on a 5-0 run for Miami with three kills from Heredia Colon and another ace from Feliciano. The Hurricanes extended the lead to 13-9, but SMU fought back to take the lead after six straight points. Rodriguez won the joust at the net to put the Hurricanes at one point deficit, 18-19, but SMU went on to take the final set, 25-21.
The Hurricanes will head to the West Coast to take on Cal and Stanford Oct. 16 and 19, respectively.
