VB Continues Historic Start with Wake Forest Sweep
WINSTON SALEM, N.C. – The No. 22-ranked University of Miami volleyball team (14-1, 4-0 ACC) swept the Wake Forest Demon Deacons (7-8, 1-3 ACC) on Sunday afternoon at Reynolds Gym.
Miami’s 14th straight win marks the best start since 2002, only the second year of the program’s rebirth, when they started 15-0.
The Hurricanes tallied 42 kills, 40 digs, 12 aces and seven blocks. Senior Flormarie Heredia Colon led the team with 21 kills, senior Dalia Wilson tallied six blocks and redshirt sophomore Ariana Rodriguez had 32 assists and five aces.
Miami opened the match on a 7-0 run with Rodriguez earning three aces for the 11-4 lead. The Hurricanes kept building and went on another 7-1 run to lead 20-8 following two blocks from Wilson. The team hit .478 with zero errors for the 25-11 set win.
The Hurricanes led 9-6 following two aces from Naylani Feliciano. Wake Forest fought to tie it at 13-all after their own 5-1 run and continued to lead 20-17. Miami kept fighting while Rodriguez picked up two more aces to get back in front and secure the second set, 25-23.
Wake Forest jumped ahead 7-4, but Heredia Colon answered with four straight points — a kill, an ace, and two blocks — to spark the comeback. N’Diaye added key kills and Wilson’s final block with Heredia Colón sealed Miami’s sweep 25-22.
The Hurricanes will return home to face Pitt and SMU on Oct. 10 and 12, respectively.
