Hurricanes Take 3-0 Win Over Boston College
CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – The University of Miami volleyball team (13-6, 4-4) swept the Boston College Eagles (8-12, 1-7) on Sunday afternoon in the Margot Connell Recreation Center.
The Hurricanes tallied 45 kills, 44 digs, 10 service aces and eight blocks. Sophomore Grace Lopez led the team with 11 kills, while redshirt freshman Ariana Rodriguez tallied nine kills, six aces and two blocks.
Set one started in back-and-forth action, with Miami taking the 13-12 lead after a kill from junior Flormarie Heredia Colon. The Hurricanes came out of the mid-set timeout on a 4-0 scoring run to force the Eagles to another timeout and lead, 17-15. After 17 kills for Miami and six from Rodriguez, the Hurricanes took set one, 26-24.
Back-to-back kills from senior Paula Guersching and five aces from Rodriguez helped get Miami off to a 10-0, the first time Miami has shut out a team to start a set. The Hurricanes maintained the dominance throughout set two after hitting on a .632 clip as a team, seven total aces and two blocks.
Miami came out strong in set three, with Guersching claimed back-to-back aces in the Hurricanes’ 5-0 run to lead 7-4. Boston College found some energy and took three consecutive points to cut the deficit to 11-9. The Hurricanes never backed down and went on a 5-1 run after three kills from sophomore Grace Lopez, Heredia Colon and Guersching for the 19-13 advantage. Despite a 4-0 run from Boston College, Miami took the final set, 25-23.
The Hurricanes will travel to North Carolina to face Duke and UNC on Oct. 25 and 27, respectively.
