Miami Falls to Virginia, 3-0

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The University of Miami volleyball team (10-5, 1-3 ACC) fell, 3-0, to the Virginia Cavaliers (13-2, 3-1 ACC) Sunday afternoon in the John Paul Jones Arena.

The Hurricanes notched 34 kills, 41 digs, four service aces and three blocks. Junior Flormarie Heredia Colon led the team with 11 kills and six digs, while redshirt freshman Ariana Rodriguez tallied 30 assists, nine digs and two kills.

Miami got off on a 8-5 start with kills around the court and a service ace from sophomore Grace Lopez, until Virginia came back and tied it at 10-all after a 3-0 run. Senior Paula Guersching then helped boost the Hurricanes to a 15-13 lead with a solo block. The Cavaliers took the 20-17 lead and continued to push forward to secure the opening set, 25-21.

The Hurricanes came out hot in set two, with Heredia Colon earning a kill with the assist from junior Milana Moisio, followed by an ace from Rodriguez for the 4-0 scoring run and 11-8 lead. The remainder of the set was tight, but with Miami’s 12 kills, Virginia took the second set, 25-22.

Virginia opened the third set with a 9-5 lead after a 5-1 run and maintained the lead. The Cavaliers picked up four blocks and 12 kills to claim the final set, 25-16.

The team will return home to host Notre Dame and Louisville in the Knight Sports Complex on Oct. 11 and 13.
