Hurricanes Drop Battle to No. 18 Florida State
CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The No. 25 University of Miami volleyball team (9-4, 0-2 ACC) fell in three sets to the No. 18 Florida State Seminoles (10-2, 2-0 ACC) Sunday afternoon in the Knight Sports Complex.
The Hurricanes earned 48 kills and 50 digs. Junior Flormarie Heredia Colon led the team with 16 kills on a .343 clip and eight digs, while sophomore Grace Lopez earned a double-double with 12 kills and 10 digs.
Set one opened with back-to-back kills from Heredia Colon to put Miami up 8-6. Florida State kept it close, eventually taking the 16-13 lead despite Miami’s 13 kills out of its 14 points. The remainder of the set stayed tight due to six kills each from Lopez and Heredia Colon, but the Seminoles came out on top, 25-23.
Florida State started on a 5-0 run to begin set two, until the Hurricanes started to cut the deficit to only 10-7. The Seminoles took charge the rest of the set and earned the two-set advantage with a 25-16 set score.
The Hurricanes tied the match at nine-all to keep the set tight, ultimately earning Miami a 15-14 lead. Heredia Colon then went on to earn four kills within five points to keep the momentum, followed by an Ariana Rodriguez ace, the third of the set, for the 21-17 lead. Despite having two set points, Miami dropped the final set, 27-25.
Miami will travel to Virginia Tech on Oct. 4 and Virginia on Oct. 6 to continue ACC play.
