Miami Falls to FSU in Five-Set Battle
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – The No. 25 University of Miami volleyball team (9-3, 0-1 ACC) fell in five sets to the No. 18 Florida State Seminoles (9-2, 1-0 ACC) Wednesday night in the Tully Gymnasium.
The Hurricanes tallied 54 kills, 74 digs and four blocks. Junior Flormarie Heredia Colon notched a double-double with 19 kills and 16 digs.
The Seminoles led 10-6 to start the first set before the Hurricanes came back to tie it at 14-all after a kill from senior Paula Guersching. Miami then went on a 6-1 run to lead 18-15 thanks to-back-to-back kills from junior Flormarie Heredia Colon. After three blocks from redshirt freshman Bianka Lulic, the Hurricanes took set one, 25-22.
Miami maintained the lead in the start of set two, until Florida State came back to tie at 10-all after a 4-0 run. Trading point for point, the teams kept it close with Guersching putting up four kills for the team’s 10 kills in the set, but the Seminoles walked away with set two, 25-22.
Florida State kept control of set three, leading 14-9 after three aces from the Seminoles. Miami pushed back to only trail 16-17 after a 4-1 run, with Dalia Wilson, Heredia Colon and Lopez earning consecutive kills. Moments later, the Hurricanes went up 21-19 before the set was tied at 24-all. Miami tallied 17 kills to steal set three, 26-24.
Set four saw the biggest deficit for the Hurricanes as the Seminoles led 12-5 in the first set. Miami didn’t go away, as they went on a 4-0 scoring run with junior Milana Moisio behind the serving line to cut the deficit to 12-17. FSU tied the match at two-sets all with a 25-18 set victory.
The Hurricanes earned a 4-1 lead to start the fifth set, but the Seminoles came back stronger for a 5-0 scoring run to take the 7-5 advantage. FSU ended up taking the fifth set, 15-10.
Miami will return home to face No. 18 Florida State again on Sept. 28 in the Knight Sports Complex.
