Cannon Crushes 5K School Record, Hurricanes Complete Day One of Florida Relays
GAINSEVILLE, Fla — The University of Miami track and field team completed day one of the Pepsi Florida Relays Friday evening at the University of Florida.
Austen Cannon, on the final event of the evening, clocked a school record time of 14:15.24 in the men’s 5000m race, good for a second place finish.
Cannon breaks 2018’s Sean Grossman’s time of 14:19.45 — a mark that was also set at the Florida Relays.
Kennedy Sauder, the 2024 ACC Indoor Champion in the men’s high jump, earned silver Friday afternoon with a final height of 2.16m. Sauder’s leap now ranks him third all-time in the Miami school record books for the event.
Freshman Ashton Torns finished second for the Hurricanes in the men’s long jump collegiate open division. The Austin, Texas, native jumped 7.37m in his outdoor long jump debut.
Saturday’s events start off with the men’s discus open division at 9 a.m., while the first track event begins at noon with the women’s 100m hurdle preliminary round.
