Carvalho Named Honorable Mention All-America
ATHENS, Ga. — Junior swimmer Giulia Carvalho earned Honorable Mention All-America Honors Friday after a dominant performance in the 100-yard butterfly at the 2024 NCAA Swimming & Diving Championships.
Carvalho, who set a program record in the 50-yard freestyle on her first day of competition Thursday, outdid herself Friday on Day 3 of the NCAA postseason.
The Brazil native set another program record in the morning’s preliminary round, finishing with a time of 51.31 and earning herself a trip to the night’s finals at the Gabrielsen Natatorium on the University of Georgia campus.
Carvalho finished sixth in the consolation finals in a time of 51.50, taking 14th place nationally in one of her top events to score points for the Hurricanes.
It was the second straight day featuring a top-24 finish for Carvalho, who tied for No. 22 in the 50-yard freestyle on Thursday when she became the first Hurricane to swim the event in under 22 seconds (21.99).
Carvalho was one of two Hurricanes to compete on Friday; redshirt senior Emma Shuppert participated in the 100-yard backstroke, where she finished the morning’s prelims in a time of 52.98.
Carvalho will swim the 200-yard breaststroke on Saturday to cap Miami’s trip to Athens.
