Carvalho Sets School Record at NCAA Championships

ATHENS, Ga. — Miami Hurricanes junior swimmer Giulia Carvalho broke the program record in the 50-yard freestyle Thursday afternoon in an impressive first day from the 2024 NCAA Swimming & Diving Championships.

Carvalho, who qualified for the NCAA postseason for the first time in her career earlier in March, became the first swimmer in Miami history to swim one of her signature events in under 22 seconds, clocking in at a blazing 21.99.

The Brazil native, who will also compete in events on Friday and Saturday, moved up 24 spots nationally from her seeding time to place No. 22 in the nation in the event at the Gabrielsen Natatorium on the University of Georgia campus.

One of Miami’s top point getters all season, Carvalho will compete in the 100-yard butterfly on Friday.

Veteran Emma Shuppert will compete in the 100-yard backstroke Friday, while Carvalho will compete on Saturday in the 200-yard breaststroke to cap Miami’s trip to Athens.
