Miami Takes Down Notre Dame, 4-3
SOUTH BEND, Ind. – The No. 20 University of Miami women’s tennis team went undefeated in its first ACC road trip, capping the weekend with a 4-3 win over Notre Dame on Sunday afternoon.
Miami (6-3, 4-1 ACC) picked up its third-straight win after a battle with Notre Dame (12-6, 3-4 ACC), highlighted by Isabella Pfennig coming back and forcing a third set to clinch the match for the Hurricanes.
Doubles action was a battle on each court. The Fighting Irish opened the match by shutting down No. 45 Isabella Pfennig and Xinyi Nong, 6-2, on court one from Page Freeman and Julia Andreach. The Hurricanes answered with a 7-5 win from Leonie Schuknecht and Antonia Balzert on court two against Akari Matsuno and Carrie Beckman.
Coming down to court three, Alexa Noel and Audrey Boch-Collins fought for the 7-5 win over Yashna Yellayi and Nibi Ghosh to secure the opening point.
Singles was no easy route for Miami on its way to a win. No. 96 Boch-Collins dominated Beckman with a 6-0, 6-1 win on court five to extend the lead. Notre Dame put themselves on the board with a 6-3, 6-0 victory from Ghosh against Schuknecht at the No. 4 spot.
The Hurricanes then took back-to-back courts to clinch the win. Nong grabbed the 4-6, 6-3, 6-2 win on court six over Matsuno before No. 58 Pfennig came back after losing the first set to win court two, 3-6, 6-3, 6-4, against Freeman.
Despite already securing the win, Notre Dame took the last two courts. No. 71 Andreach notched court one over No. 11 Noel, 7-6, 7-6, while Pozder claimed court three, 5-7, 7-5, 7-5, against No. 114 Balzert.
