Miami Earns First Ranked Win Over No. 9 Texas A&M

CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The University of Miami women’s tennis team secured its first ranked win of the season after a 4-3 victory over No. 9 Texas A&M Friday afternoon.

The Aggies started the match claiming the doubles point. On court three, Alexa Noel and Audrey Boch-Collins took down Sydney Fitch and Daria Smetannikov, 6-1. Texas A&M then won back-to-back courts for the lead going into singles. Nicole Khirin and Lucciana Perez defeated Antonia Balzert and Leonie Schuknecht, 6-3, while the No. 3 duo of Mary Stoiana and Mia Kupres took down Xinyi Nong and Isabella Pfennig, 6-4.

Despite being down, the Hurricanes stormed back in singles. Texas A&M’s No. 26 Kupres scored first over Balzert on court three, 6-0, 6-1. Miami then claimed back-to-back courts on court five and six. No. 81 Boch-Collins took down Smetannikov, 6-4, 6-0, while Nong defeated Jeanette Mireles, 6-4, 6-4 to tie up the match at 2-2.

The Aggies took the lead again, with Perez defeating Schuknecht, 3-6, 6-1, 7-5, on court four. Miami’s No. 25 Noel battled with the No. 1 ranked singles player in the country, Mary Stoiana, on court one. Noel secured the 6-2, 6-7 (3), 6-3 win to tie the match again.

Coming down to the last court, No. 90 Pfennig battled on court two against No. 31 Khirin and claimed the 7-6 (3), 4-6, 7-6 (5) win.

The Hurricanes are back in action on Sunday, Feb. 4 as they host UCF.
