Swimming Sweeps Tri-Meet in Houston
HOUSTON, Texas — The University of Miami swimming team impressed in its tri-meet at the University of Houston Friday afternoon, sweeping decisions over the host Cougars and Rice Owls.
Despite competing without their diving contingent, the Hurricanes topped UH, 165-129, and also beat Rice, 193-68.
Miami improved to 9-1 this season in dual meet competitions with two impressive wins away from its home pool. Miami’s swimmers totaled 14 best times, one school record and seven times that cracked the program’s ‘top 10’ times list.
The Hurricanes showed some early desire by taking the top two spots in the 200-yard medley relay to open the race. The Hurricanes ‘A’ entry won in 1:38.33, while its ‘B’ entry (1:40.04) was not far behind.
Miami’s depth showed in the opening stages of the meet, including a 1-2-3 finish in the 200-yard freestyle. Talia Bates set a new school standard in her signature event (1:45.71), while Adrianna Cera (1:46.08) and Jane Fitzgerald (1:48.07) were second and third, respectively.
Emma Shuppert (52.73), Leah Treglia (54.33) and Sarah Sensenbrenner (54.43) took the top three spots in the 100-yard backstroke to build on Miami’s lead, while Bates added a second win in the 50-yard freestyle (22.85). Jacey Hinton was second (22.90).
Bates, Fitzgerald and Hinton captured the top three finishes in the 100-yard freestyle, while Sensenbrenner, MK Kelley and Emma Lunn did the same in the 200-yard backstroke. Adrianna Cera (500-yard freestyle) and Giulia Carvalho (100-yard butterfly) added late victories to help seal the Hurricanes’ sweep.
