Miami Notches Back-To-Back Shutouts

CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The University of Miami men’s tennis team claimed back-to-back wins over Buffalo and Mercer in a doubleheader on Friday at the Neil Schiff Tennis Center.

Miami started off the day facing the University at Buffalo. Adrien Burdet and Martin Katz were the first to take the win on court two, taking down Michael Malkin and Finn Macnamara, 6-2. Vladislav Melnic and Antonio Prat then clinched the doubles point over Cheng Tang and Yu-Shiang Huang at the top court, 6-2. Sam Baumgartner and Yannik Rahman were up 5-4 to Daniils Snaiders and Theodoros Mitsakos on court three when play was halted.

Going into singles, the Hurricanes only need three wins to win the match. Nacho Serra Sanchez was first to finish, defeating Macnamara, 6-0, 6-2, on court five. Then, Katz took down Tang, 6-2, 6-1, at the top court to extend the lead.

Rahman clinched the Miami win over Malkin, 6-2, 6-2, on court four to secure the match and end play.

The Hurricanes notched their first win of the day over the Bulls with a 4-0 shutout.

The team then returned to face Mercer University and started the match off with a clinched doubles point. Melnic and Prat were first to take a doubles win on court two, taking down Nemanja Stefanovic and Marceau Fouilhoux, 6-2. Baumgartner and Serra Sanchez secured the opening point over Victor Putter and Samuel Barrow, 6-2, on court three. Katz and Burdet then followed it up with a 6-2 win at the top court over Lucas Dini and Samuel MacLeod.

With all six courts playing out, Miami went on to take every match for the sweep.

Serra Sanchez got things started with a dominant 6-1, 6-0 win over Putter on court four. Burdet followed right behind with a 6-1, 6-3 victory against Fouilhoux. Baumgartner clinched the match with a 6-1, 6-4 win against Barrow at the No. 6 spot.

As play continued, Melnic took the win over Stefanovic on court one, 6-2, 6-4, and Katz claimed court two over Dini, 6-2, 7-6 (2). Prat completed the sweep with a hard-fought 6-2, 7-6 (5) over MacLeod.

The Hurricanes improved to 4-0 to start the season without dropping a match in their first doubleheader of the season.

Miami is back in action for ITA Kickoff Weekend as they travel to Tucson, Ariz., on Jan. 27 to take on host No. 16 Arizona.
