Canes Capture Third-Straight ACC Win
CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The University of Miami volleyball team claimed its third-straight ACC win with a 3-1 victory against UNC Sunday afternoon.
Miami (10-4, 3-1 ACC) tallied 48 kills, 52 digs, 44 assists and nine blocks to finish the job. Redshirt senior Angela Grieve and freshman Grace Lopez each grabbed 14 kills, while sophomore Cianna Tejada set a new career record for herself with eight blocks.
The first set one started strong for the Canes with a 4-0 scoring run with help from sophomore Flormarie Heredia Colon with back-to-back kills, making it 9-4. The Tarheels answered and tied it at 11-all. Once again, the Canes pulled away and notched the 25-17 set-one victory after 12 kills and three blocks.
UNC remained in control through most of set two, leading 21-12. The Canes tried to cut the deficit, but the Tarheels didn’t slow down with a .464 kill percentage.
The Canes went on a 6-0 run early in the third set to make it 14-6. With the momentum going, Miami finished the rest of the set with a strong lead after 15 kills on a .625 kill percentage to take it, 25-13.
Set four kicked off with an early 7-1 lead for Miami until the Tarheels fought back to lead 13-11 and continue to remain in front most of the set. The Canes made a comeback and pushed the set over 25. Kills from Grieve and an ace from Lopez helped Miami to come out victorious and claim the final set, 28-26.
The Hurricanes will remain home to face in-state rival Florida State on Oct. 4.
